Update to Maine Dig Safe Laws – Legislation Passed

A fire captain was killed, and seven other people seriously injured on September 16th, 2019 in Farmington, Maine when a building exploded because of a propane leak. The leak was caused when drilling to install a bollard in a nearby parking lot struck an underground propane line, causing hundreds of gallons of propane to seep into the ground, and eventually into the basement of the building that exploded. The operator did not call Dig Safe, but the propane line would not have been marked in any case, because liquefied propane lines were not covered under Maine’s existing one-call laws at that time.
