The Basics Part 5-1: The Target Line

Even though peak and null agree, sometimes we have to walk around objects. We can’t always walk right on top of the line. It’s a good practice to occasionally do a horizontal sweep across the right-of-way to see that you are still on your target line (Figures 19-21). It’s hard to say there’s a right way or a wrong way to hold the instrument, but minimizing the swing will keep you prepared for a sudden change in the line’s direction. You’re unlikely to miss a change in direction on the line when you minimize the swing of the receiver.
